In 1862, Slavery was abolished in the District of Columbia..In 1973, Leila Smith became the 1st African American woman to be elected as a Mayor of a US city..Taft,OK..Happy Bornday to Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar who was born in 1947!
